Word Search


1. Choose one story from your Houghton Mifflin Reading book that you have read in your regular education class

2. Select important spelling words from that story to include in your word search

  • Kindergarten = 5 words

  • First Grade = 10 words

  • Second Grade = 10 words

  • Third Grade = 15 words

  • Fourth Grade = 15 words

  • Fifth Grade = 20 words

  • Sixth Grade = 20 words

3. Go to www.puzzlemaker.com

4. Click on the word search button

5. Enter the title for your word search (title of story)

6. Enter the size of your word search puzzle (across=15/down=15)

7. Word search puzzle options (share letters occasionally)

8. Word search puzzle output type (HTML)

9. Enter your spelling words (with a space or comma in between the words)

10. Click create my puzzle

11. Print your puzzle

Criss-Cross

1. Choose another story from your Houghton Mifflin Reading book that you have read in your regular education class

2. Select important vocabulary words from that story to include in your criss-cross

  • Kindergarten = 5 words

  • First Grade = 10 words

  • Second Grade = 10 words

  • Third Grade = 15 words

  • Fourth Grade = 15 words

  • Fifth Grade = 20 words

  • Sixth Grade = 20 words

3. Go to www.puzzlemaker.com

4. Click on the criss-cross button

5. Enter the title of your criss-cross puzzle (title of the story)

6. Enter the number of squares for your puzzle (width=50/height=50)

7. Enter the size of the square (square size=30)

8. Enter the words and clues

9. Click create my puzzle

10. Print your puzzle

Maze


Students in K, 1, and 2...

1. Go to www.puzzlemaker.com

2. Click on the mazes button

3. Enter the title of your maze

4. Choose the shape of your maze

5. Enter the size of your maze

6. Enter the number of pixels of your maze

7. Choose the fill style for your maze



Students in Grades 3, 4, 5, and 6...

1. Choose one story from your Houghton Mifflin Reading book that you have read in your regular education class

2. Go to Microsoft Word

3. Build a table 14x14 using table creation icon in Standard Toolbar

4. Double space cells using Format/Paragraph; choose Line Spacing/Double

5. Create a path between a Start and End point using the Border icon on the Formatting Toolbar to remove cell walls

6. Choose a place to insert a picture (later) by highlighting an area of 4 or 9 cells and merge those cells by selecting Table/Merge Cells

7. Choose a picture from Clip Art (theme must be based upon your reading story) and insert it into the space you've created. Ensure your cursor is in the newly merged cell, then select Insert/Picture/Clip Art and insert picture. The picture may not fit perfectly at first, so be sure to adjust the size and proportion immediately to retain consistency in cell sizes throughout the maze.

8. Create additional paths to create dead ends in the picture you created

9. Continue to carefully add paths and pictures, adjusting the details as you go to create a challenging maze for your friends

10. Create a title for your completed maze using Word Art (using the Drawing Toolbar). And be sure to add your name before printing.
